In 1992 Patti Moran approached Business Insurers of the Carolinas hoping to create insurance policies that would thoroughly cover pet sitters. Many of the insurance needs pet sitters require are unique to their profession and so we worked to create policies that would best fit their needs and since then have continued to add and adjust as the industry has expanded and new insurance needs have come to light. Every pet sitter should do their research and search out the right insurance to fit their needs regardless of the company they choose for their coverage. A great place to start is with a primer on the most common coverage and policies.

As most of you know, we are required by our insurance company to submit renewal applications every year. Often we receive questions regarding the various coverage options/endorsements on the application. We have had many a sitter contact our office after a claim and state they were confused as to whether or not they needed a particular coverage, and can't understand why their claim is being denied. Therefore, to give all members a better understanding of the coverage options now offered under the PSI Liability policy, I would like to take this opportunity to go through each coverage option in detail, and discuss whether you need it for your individual business.

In reviewing pet sitter insurance claims over the last 5 years, dog bite claims continue to be the loss leader in terms of severity. The average cost of a dog bite claim runs between $25,000-$30,000, but can run significantly higher depending on the injuries sustained by the victim(s) involved and actual specifics of the individual claims. These claims costs have been on the rise for the last several years, primarily due to increased medical costs, as well as increases in settlements/judgements/jury awards. So for this briefing, I would like to give some examples of the types of claims we have seen over the years as well as some recommendations on how to avoid these claims from occuring in your business.
